Before you carry out any renovation works

By: fongsuimy

It is a taboo in the Chinese community to carry out renovation works in a house if a member of the household is pregnant.
Throughout the ages, the Chinese observed that carrying out renovation works when a family member is pregnant can bring negative consequences for the mother and the unborn child.
Why? Is there a good reason behind this practice?
I can think of at least a few good reasons even though nobody knows for sure.
A house that is undergoing renovation is not a safe place – pregnant or not. Accidents are more likely to happen. The center of gravity is shifted in a pregnant person and the likelihood of falling down is higher. Furthermore, pregnancy makes the ligaments softer and the joints less stable which increases the risk of injury.

During the renovation works, the pregnant person may get involved in moving items about. Some research shows that there is a higher potential of miscarriages in who do strenuous labor.
Pregnant mothers who smoke increases the risk of fetal injury to the unborn child. It is also a cause of premature birth and low birth weight. During renovations, the environment is usually dusty and unhealthy. While I am not sure if it has the same effect as smoking, it would be wise to take precaution.

There is growing evidence to suggest that babies in the womb are aware of external noise. In particular, loud noises have shown to stimulate the fetus directly by causing changes in the heart rate. Other than direct noise, the fetus is also not shielded from the mother’s response to stress. The physical change that the mother experience may be transmitted to the fetus causing a threat to proper fetal development.
A study conducted on Japan with over 1000 births produce evidence to suggest that noisy areas have a greater chance of producing low-weight babies.
What if you have no choice but to renovate? How can you overcome this prohibition?
The answer is quite simple. Simply move the pregnant person to another location during the renovation period. That is all you need to do.
