Blogging & Social Networking is this the end?

By: Lee Coppin

Scanning the news to day I see that Facebook is in court fighting for its life over who thought about it first claims and Myspace has close 29,000 profiles of known sex offenders. Is this the first signs of the death of social bookmaking and blogging?

Is this the start of the end? Have we taken the first steps down a slippery slope where we all see our freedoms regulated much more closely?

The massive growth of blogging and social networking has been possible due to the ability of users to practise freedom of speech at the speed of typing. In a flash we can update our blogs and profiles online with little or no thought.

As a blogger I am concerned that if we start seeing governments and regulatory bodies becoming involved in the "policing" of our content and blogs off the back of these events how will our hand be tied.

Don't we all have a social and moral responsibility to police ourselves and keep our chunks of internet above board? I see every day posts and comments from people who seem to not care or forget that this is a world wide medium; after all WWW stands for World Wide Web.

Do I need to get a grip as I am over reacting or will this mushroom out of control resulting in us all losing the hard earned online incomes we have come to enjoy?

The power of the internet is such that even the smallest thing can become a world wide issue in hours. In the blink of an eye anything can become a major world wide event; some time I think we forget that.

I am only one blogger but I can still make a difference. I can only hope that the major players out there set the example and promote socially acceptable blogging.

We can all hope that this storm stays in a tea cup but we all should take note that what we do online is visible to the whole connected world. We have to regulate ourselves before others decide to do it for us.
