A comprehensive study (conducted by the NPD Group) reveals what many have known all along. DVD ripping does not pose a major threat to the movie industry. While movie execs feared theyd lose billions of dollars, like music industry counterparts, they failed to take a very important factor into consideration. Music is not being ripped and sold; no, it is being shared amongst users worldwide via legal peer-to-peer sharing sites like Limewire and Kaza, as well as many others. The movie industry could, in fact, lose billions if movie sharing sites begin to pop up on the web; as of this time, there are no such sites and no evidence that they are in the works. The music industry, which has been deeply impacted by peer-to-peer file sharing, is one of the reasons movie execs have been so worried. Napster, the original music sharing site, now has plenty of company, including Limewire and Kaza to name just a couple. This peer-to-peer sharing is thought to have cost the music industry billions of dollars in lost revenue. So, why hasnt DVD ripping become wildly popular? The NPD study reveals there are two main reasons: the amount of time it takes to rip a DVD and the limitations which have been imposed by Digital Rights Management (more on that later). According to Russ Crupnick, Senior Analyst for NPD there is a misconception about the amount of time it actually takes to perform ripping. Per Crupnick, In my brief experimentation with these applications, they seem to work fine. It seems to come down to consumers saying If I cant have the ripping completed in a minute, Im not going to do it at all. The fact of the matter is, with a quick internet connection, ripping takes about fifteen minutes- at most. The rapidity in which this can be accomplished is aided through new technology offered by Isofter and others. Senior Analyst for the NPD Group, Mr. Russ Crupnick revealed there are two major reasons the general public is not participating in DVD ripping in massive numbers. First, many people think the process is very time-consuming. Secondly, many others are fearful (because they do not understand the measures recently introduced by the DRM (Management of Digital Rights). It is not surprising people who want fast food, immediate weight loss and instant gratification dont want to take part in a time-consuming process. The fact of the matter is that DVD ripping can be completed start to finish in about fifteen minutes. The fifteen minute estimate applies to computer users who have relatively fast internet connections and the appropriate software and equipment on hand. Even with the latest ripping technology widely available, most people are not using it. It should be understood that DVD ripping is not an illegal enterprise. The practice is legal as long as copies are not ripped aimed for resale. It is peer-to-peer file sharing that has cost the music industry a great deal. Movie execs time would be better spent trying to stop that practice rather that on the relatively obscure practice of DVD ripping.
