Metabolism is the ratio of calories consumed compared to calories burned in the process. For us, everyday, it's our ability to utilize the foods we eat to their fullest extent. You will get lower amounts of energy from each calorie eaten, if you have a lower metabolism. Obviously, a higher metabolism is key to having a healthy, efficient body. People who burn calories quickly (have high metabolisms) are usually slim while those who don't are heavier. We all use calories at different rates, since our metabolisms are as unique as we are. To make our metabolic rates work for us, we must first understand and accommodate what makes them unique. Your vitamin and nutritional needs, your thyroidal and endocrinal production, and how well the processes of your body work together all determine your metabolic rate. Raising that rate is not a matter of taking a magic pill, though for years people have sought just that solution. Controlling your metabolic rate has to be done indirectly, through exercise, diet, and willpower. Genetics is what mostly determines our base metabolic rate. Genetics are a factor in our metabolic rate and body type. This base rate can be raised or lowered through diet and exercise, though, and is not “fixed” in place. Using exercise to build and tone muscle mass, we can reduce body fat and significantly raise metabolic rates for the long-term. The more muscle mass we have, the more calories required to maintain it, thus the more energy we burn—meaning we have a higher metabolic rate. Ensuring that you practice proper nutritional habits will help you to steer your metabolism closer to your goal. Foods rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients necessary to make our bodies more efficient with practice, we will have less fat in the body and increase our metabolism Every person's body is unique and has different needs in order to be well, so listen to your body, it will benefit you later.
